League of Women Voters Celebrates Ratification 19th Amendment

League of Women Voters Charleston Flyer

Lowcountry women are invited to join the League of Women Voters in celebrating 90th anniversary of both the League of Women Voters and the ratification of the 19th Amendment that extended voting rights to women.

This letter from Mary Horres offers more information:

This year marks the 90th anniversary of both the League of Women Voters and the ratification of the 19th Amendment that extended voting rights to women. We will be celebrating both these triumphs with a dinner on Thursday evening, August 26, 2010, at the Town and Country Inn & Conference Center. I am writing to invite you and your membership to participate in this once-in-a-decade event.

Inez Tenenbaum, Chairman of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, will be our keynote speaker, and we will be recognizing the contributions of eight women of distinction in public service from our tri-county region as well. Honorees include Colleen Condon, Charleston County Council; Kristi Harrington, Judge, 9th Judicial Circuit; Jacquelyn Heyward, Mayor, Town of Hollywood; Deadra Jefferson, Judge, 9th Judicial Circuit; Wilhelmina Moore, Berkeley County School Board; Thomasena Stokes-Marshall, Mt. Pleasant Town Council; Scarlett Wilson, Solicitor for the 9th Circuit Court; and Annette Young, SC Legislator.

The League of Women Voters of the Charleston Area is a non-partisan, non-profit political organization of both men and women who are committed to building better communities and a stronger democracy. The League conducts numerous activities in our tri-county area to educate citizens on public policy issues and to encourage informed and active participation in government through voter registration and non-partisan candidate forums.

We invite you to celebrate these important milestones with us and request your help in notifying your membership of this opportunity. We kindly ask if you would post this information on your organization’s email newsletter and website, or any other method your organization communicates with members. Tickets can be purchased online at our Charleston League web site www.lwvcharleston.org for $60.00 per person.

I hope you and your membership will join us in celebrating these milestones of 90 years for the voting rights of women and the establishment of the League of Women Voters and to recognize the public service of eight distinguished women of our community. Members of our League of Women Voters of the Charleston Area will contact you over the next week to discuss your participation.

I thank you for your consideration of this request. If you would like more information or have questions, please do not hesitate to contact Stacey Lindbergh by email (slindbergh@homesc.com) or telephone (437.1751).

The right of voting was hard won. We must remember it is a privilege and responsibility. If you’d like to share this with your staff and colleagues, the flyer provided by them is her for you to download.

Lowcountry Women Votes

According to the Center for Women in Charleston, some years back, there was an informal coalition of women’s organizations called “Lowcountry Women Votes.” The purpose was to encourage more women to register and to vote by providing information to its members.

Women who vote make a difference

You can make a difference

The Center for Women and the League of Women Voters of the Charleston Area are trying to revive the coalition in 2010.

As part of our efforts to do so, we are providing a publication with information on how to register and information on various aspects of getting women to become active voters.

You can download this rack card with information how to become registered to vote and how to learn where to vote.
